The Herald Music Series is a community service of St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church in Plymouth, Minnesota. The series is a reflection and an extension of St. Philip the Deacon’s long commitment to outstanding music—both in its worship life and through concerts outside of worship, which take advantage of our architecturally and acoustically beautiful sanctuary.
Music is an important part of the Christian tradition—“Oh, come let us sing to the Lord” says the Psalmist. And in the Lutheran tradition, specifically, music has always held a special place in the life of worship. About the central importance of music, Martin Luther himself said that it is “a fair and glorious gift of God.”
A herald refers to an official messenger who brings news—a message. And, of course, the Christian message is referred to as “good news.” Churches like St. Philip the Deacon are called to serve as heralds of this news, proclaiming it in all we do. The Herald Music Series is one way we can share the beauty of music—a “fair and glorious gift of God”—with the larger community. We hope and pray that the series will, in its own way, help to point us all to the giver of this gift.
