Concert description: Mezzo-soprano Kristina Rodel Sorum joins the Lux String Quartet in Things to tell you now, a collaborative concert celebrating music from the last hundred years. With works by Samuel Barber, Nico Muhly, Rebecca Clarke, Jocelyn Hagen, and Timothy C. Takach, this program highlights how new music breathes life into timeless text.

Lux String Quartet

Lux String Quartet is an award-winning ensemble based in the Twin Cities that brings a dynamic edge to performance and education. Since 2013, Lux has maintained an active presence in musical spheres ranging from concert halls and churches to breweries and podcasts. Lux seeks to inspire audiences with unique programs that highlight the beauty and diversity of music from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Collaboration is a cornerstone of Lux’s mission. The quartet partners with living composers to bring new art to life. Past collaborations include Twin Cities’ own David Evan Thomas, Juilliard’s Dean of Music David Ludwig, and Australian composer Nicholas Vines. In the 24/25 season Lux premiered Vines’ Confessions of a Pangolin, the first piece commissioned by the quartet. Lux will record all of Vines’ quartets in the fall of 2027.

Lux performs with other Twin Cities artists on a regular basis. In the 22/23 season Lux collaborated with dancer and choreographer Danielle Ricci. In 2026 Lux performed with the Belle Chanter Treble Choir, the Twin Cities Bronze Bell Choir, and participated in the Violins of Hope Minnesota residency. Lux will present a collaborative recital series with mezzo-soprano Kristina Rodel Sorum in 2027.

In addition to their own recitals, Lux performs in several concert series including Schubert Club’s Courtroom Concerts, the Waverly Chamber Music Series, Saint Mark’s Music Series, Bayfield Summer Concerts, Lakes Area Music Festival, Hastings Art Center Series, Live @ Lynnhurst, and the Wayzata Community Church Series. In 2025 Lux was awarded first prize in the Charleston International Music Competition.

Dedicated to music education and instilling a love for art in the next generation, Lux regularly presents recitals and workshops to students throughout the Twin Cities metro. MPR has selected the quartet as a ClassNotes Artist six times, and Lux is currently quartet-in-residence at the Colorado Chamber Music Institute. Lux recently mentored University of Minnesota graduate composition students and performed their original compositions in the Twin Cities New Music Festival.

Kristina Rodel Sorum

Kristina Rodel Sorum (she/her) is a sought-after Minneapolis-based Mezzo Soprano with a breadth of experience as a soloist and chorister.  Passionate about all forms of vocal music, she is equally at home performing as a soloist for timeless masterworks as she is premiering art song and opera so new that the ink hasn’t dried. Praised as “lovely” in the Minnesota Star Tribune for her performance as the alto soloist in J.S. Bach Cantata 147 with Bach Society of Minnesota, she lends a clear, approachable sound and a warm and inviting artistry to every performance. Kristina is a frequent recitalist, having made her Schubert Club recital premiere in 2025, and performing regularly as a soloist on the Thursday Musical Artist Series. Kristina is a two-time award winner at SongSlam Minneapolis, collaborating with leading composers of new vocal music (Timothy C. Takach, 2025 and Isaac Lovdahl, 2020) in this competition for new art songs put on by Source Song Festival and Sparks & Wiry Cries.

Kristina has appeared with ensembles such as the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers, Bach Society of Minnesota, Bach Roots Festival, the Minnesota Renaissance Choir, Consortium Carissimi, The Singers: Minnesota Choral Artists, The Minnesota Chorale, and imPulse.  She has also appeared with Opera Reading Project, Journey North Opera (formerly Twin Cities Fringe Opera), The Twin Cities Early Music Festival, the Lakes Area Music Festival, the Lyra Baroque Orchestra, the Prague Summer Nights Young Artist Festival, and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival through Yale School of Music.
